There is more and more being written on the medical attributes of CBD and it’s connection to medical marijuana. For many, it is good news for their health.
Those who embrace marijuana for the euphoric effects, CBD is of no interest. Pot users want the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) compound.
CBD, Cannabidiol Is Promising
There are some patients finding relief because of THC, but that is not where science is going with the medical uses of marijuana. The CBD (cannabidiol) is a promising treatment for a number of health issues.
The Washington Post reported on Jackson Leyden, a healthy active boy who, shortly after turning eight years old, began to have seizures. Fifty hospital stays and 20 doctors later, Jackson began receiving CBD rich marijuana. The substance is legal where the Leyden’s live.
It was reported that within only a few days, his seizures stopped. A few months later, he stopped taking other meds.
The report followed Jackson, and while he still has seizures, a couple a week, they are down from 200. He continues to receive treatments using drops to avoid lung issues. Dosages are easier to manage as well.
The Value Is In CBD
“CBD has been a game-changer for medical marijuana,” says Martin Lee, the director of Project CBD, a Northern California nonprofit that promotes use of the compound. “Its safety and lack of psychoactivity undermines any argument that it should be illegal. It’s really shifted the national discussion on this issue.”
The Washington Post reported that more scientist understand the value of CBD, and it potential.
Pal Pacher, a pharmacologist and cardiologist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, says there has been an “explosion of research”.
A significant area of research is being done with epilepsy, and reducing seizures.
Other studies show promise in treating anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. A German study giving schizophrenic patients CBD, had a positive effect in reducing psychotic symptoms like hallucinations.
Good News For Cancer Patients
Cancer researchers are finding similar results. Sean McAllister and Pierre Desprez, researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute in San Francisco determined that cancer cells can be blocked from metastasizing by administering CBD.
Researchers do not yet know how CBD actually works. It is known to stimulate multiple biochemical pathways. It may account for the wide range of effects.
The compound CBD is an antioxidant as well as significant anti-inflammatory. There is an increase in serotonin the neurotransmitter levels. Levels of other molecules also increase and are traced to reducing pain and anxiety.
A Brazilian pharmacologist, Francisco Guimaraes, University of Sao Paolo, discovered increases in the growth of new neurons in the brain. They are central in depression and anxiety.
He was further quoted, “[CBD] is a Disneyland for a pharmacologist,” he says. “There are so many possible mechanisms, so many possible ways it can be useful.”
Government regulations and controls have an adverse effect on many studies. Simple things like security of marijuana supplies have an effect on efficient research.
While the DEA, Drug Enforcement Administration still maintains marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance, researchers work to prove the medical benefits of marijuana in general, and CBD in particular.
Reports show that thousands of people are currently using cannabis with high CBD content, for medical purposes. The THC, or psychoactive compound found in marijuana is not what researchers are looking at.
While marijuana is only legal in some states, there are cannabis products containing CBD in levels sufficient to have medical benefits. The products are legal in all 50 states, and do not require a prescription.
It is the CBD (cannabidiol) ingredient that promotes health. If you have an interest, here is one product that has cannabidiol levels high enough to have an impact. If you just want to receive the euphoric effects of the THC compound of marijuana, this is not what you’re looking for.
